Companies House publishes a free monthly file of every live company. We counted the ones that list SIC code 64991, “security dealing on own account”, by the date they were formed.
6,051 companies on the UK register list SIC code 64991, “security dealing on own account”, in the Companies House file dated 1 October 2026. 5,673 of them are marked Active.
1,077 of them were incorporated in 2025, double the 535 from 2024 and more than any earlier year. Monthly formations peaked at 146 in October 2025.
2026 is running slower than 2025. 627 companies were formed from January to September 2026, against 745 in the same months of 2025 that are still on the register.
Most are very small or new. 1,905 have not filed accounts yet, 1,722 last filed micro-entity accounts and 643 filed dormant accounts. 31% have a London registered address.

These are companies still on the register. Companies that were dissolved before October 2026 are not in the file, so older years look smaller than they were. The recent jump is still clear, because few of the 2024 to 2026 companies have had time to close.

Companies with prop-trading-style names
We also searched every live company name (not only SIC 64991) for “prop trading”, “proptrade”, “prop firm”, “proprietary trading” and “funded trader”. That found 25 companies. We removed 6 whose first SIC code is a property activity (68xxx, for example buying and selling real estate), because “prop” there means property. The 19 left are below. A name says nothing about what a company actually does, and we make no claim about any of them.

Method
We read all 5,704,712 rows of the file and kept companies with 64991 in any of their up to four SIC fields. 3,238 list 64991 as their only code. Counts by year and month use the incorporation date on the register. The name search used whole-word matches on the company name.
SIC codes are chosen by the company when it registers or files a confirmation statement. Companies House does not check them.
Caveats
This is a count of companies that describe themselves this way, not of active traders, and not of prop firms. Many will be personal trading vehicles, and some may never trade. A company being on the register does not mean it is authorised by the FCA; we did not check the FCA Register for this page.
The file only holds live companies (including those in liquidation or with a strike-off proposal). Companies dissolved earlier are missing, so this undercounts older years. A company can change its SIC code later.
