Last updated: 15 October 2026 How much money do CFTC enforcement actions involve, and is the number going down? We read all 222 press releases the Commodity Futures Trading Commission tagged as enforcement from 25 April 2023 to 30 September 2026, took the dollar amount from each headline, and kept charges (allegations) apart from orders, judgments and settlements.
The CFTC put out 22 enforcement press releases announcing orders, judgments or settlements in 2025, down from 53 in 2024. In 2026 through 30 September there were 18.
Dollar amounts in those headlines fell from $14.12 billion in 2024 to $819.9 million in 2025 and $69.6 million so far in 2026. 2024 is dominated by one case: the $12.7 billion judgment against FTX and Alameda.
The two biggest numbers of 2026 are allegations, not outcomes: charges against Cash FX Group over what the CFTC calls a $950 million fraud scheme (25 September) and against Goliath Ventures over a $400 million scheme (11 August). Both are allegations, and the CFTC had announced no resolution of either by 15 October 2026.
Whistleblower awards announced in 2026 total over $158 million, including awards totalling over $150 million on 14 September. These are payments to tipsters, not penalties, and are listed separately.
CFTC enforcement releases by year
| Year | Releases | Orders, judgments, settlements | Dollars named in those headlines | Charges filed (allegations) | Dollars named in charges |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 (from 25 Apr) | 80 | 48 | $9.08 billion | 23 | $147.1 million |
| 2024 | 81 | 53 | $14.12 billion | 17 | $280.6 million |
| 2025 | 32 | 22 | $819.9 million | 2 | — |
| 2026 (to 30 Sep) | 29 | 18 | $69.6 million | 5 | $1.35 billion |
“Dollars named” adds up the amounts in each press release headline, such as “to Pay Over $31 Million”. Releases with no amount in the headline count toward the release totals only. Amounts in charges are the CFTC’s description of the alleged scheme, not money anyone has been ordered to pay.

Charges are allegations. A defendant is not liable unless a court or the CFTC finds so or the defendant settles. For cases involving prop firms, see our prop firm lawsuits tracker; for open CFTC proposals, the CFTC rulemaking comment tracker.

Method
We grouped each release by its headline. Releases that say the CFTC charges, sues or files an action, without an order or payment, are “charges filed”. Releases about orders, judgments, settlements, resolved actions or payments are “orders, judgments, settlements”. Whistleblower awards and policy notices are kept apart.
Amounts are taken from headlines only, as stated (“over $31 million” counts as $31 million). Where a headline names two firms’ payments we add them; where it gives a part and an overall figure we use the overall figure.
Caveats
Headline amounts are not collections. Courts often order sums that are never fully paid, and many releases have no amount in the headline at all.
The same case can produce several releases: charges, then one or more orders. Adding years together can count a case twice.
The CFTC’s own fiscal-year enforcement results use different counting. Use them for official totals; this page shows what the press releases announced and when.
2023 starts on 25 April, the oldest release on the pages we read, and 2026 ends on 30 September, the latest release on 15 October 2026.
