Prop Firm Graveyard: Closures, Freezes and Exits With Primary Sources

Last updated: 2 October 2026 Prop firms do shut down, freeze payouts, or exit. This page lists only cases we can document from a primary source. Each row links the firm’s own words, a regulator action, or a court filing. Rumour and unsourced “graveyard” lists are out. Missing dates stay blank.

Key findings · 8 sourced rows, checked 2 October 2026

8 firms, each with at least one primary receipt. A row is included only when we hold a firm notice, a regulator action naming the firm, or a court filing. Trade-press stories are labeled secondary and are never the only receipt.

3 firm notices say permanent closure. True Forex Funds cites financial insolvency. Funded Engineer announces permanent closure and says it will file for bankruptcy (we have not located a public bankruptcy docket). Funds For Traders cites discontinuation of platforms it previously supported.

One row is a court-ordered freeze, not a voluntary wind-down. On 29 August 2023 a U.S. District Court froze My Forex Funds (Traders Global Group) assets and appointed a temporary receiver on the CFTC’s ex parte application; the Ontario Securities Commission issued a temporary cease-trade order the same day. The CFTC complaint was dismissed with prejudice on 13 May 2025; the allegations were never decided on the merits.

Not every exit is a disappearance. My Flash Funding’s own site says it is now owned by Sway Funded. SurgeTrader’s archived primary notice documents a sales freeze after Match-Trader revoked its platform license; a later full-closure wording is reported by trade press quoting the firm’s site, and is labeled secondary because we do not hold that later page.

The graveyard

Event type is taken from the primary document, not from headlines. “Permanent closure” means the firm’s own notice uses that language (or clear equivalents). “Enforcement freeze” means a court or regulator ordered a freeze or cease-trade. “Sales freeze” means the firm said it stopped selling new accounts. “Acquisition exit” means the firm said it was sold or transferred. Payout outcomes are blank unless a primary source documents them.

What we count — and what we leave out

Included: a firm homepage or notice page we saved or archived; a CFTC RED List entry or press release; an OSC news release; a court restraining order or docketed dismissal; a BVI FSC public statement mirrored via I-SCAN. Excluded: Reddit threads, YouTube roundups, and unsourced competitor “graveyard” lists. If Finance Magnates or FX News Group is the only place a sentence appears, it is labeled secondary.

Industry-wide counts such as Finance Magnates’ claim that “80–100 prop firms” shut in 2024 are their claim, not ours. We do not publish a padded total. Null stays null.

Methodology

On 2 October 2026 we re-checked live firm pages where they still resolve, pulled Wayback CDX and id_ snapshots for shutdown-era windows, and reused primary documents already screened for our lawsuits tracker and regulator-warning map (CFTC complaint and statutory restraining order against Traders Global; CFTC RED List entry for True Forex Funds; BVI FSC statement for First Class Forex Funds; OSC cease-trade news release). Every primary quote on this page was checked against our saved HTML or court/regulator text.

Wayback Save Page Now was rate-limited (HTTP 429) during this build; we preferred existing captures. Domains that only return parking landers today are listed only when an earlier archived firm notice still carries the wording. We attempted RDAP lookups for the seed domains; none of the included rows rely on domain-lapse alone.

Common questions

How many prop firms have shut down?

We do not publish an industry-wide total. This page lists 8 firms for which we hold a primary receipt (firm notice, regulator action, or court filing), checked 2 October 2026. Larger round numbers in the trade press are their claims, not ours.

Did My Forex Funds shut down?

On 29 August 2023 a U.S. District Court froze Traders Global Group (My Forex Funds) assets and appointed a temporary receiver on a CFTC application, and the Ontario Securities Commission issued a temporary cease-trade order. The CFTC case was dismissed with prejudice on 13 May 2025 without a merits ruling. An archived firm page acknowledged traders impacted when MFF was shut down overnight.

Is True Forex Funds on a regulator list?

Yes. The CFTC RED List entry for True Forex Funds (trueforexfunds.com), dated 12 June 2023, says the entity appears to require registration but is not registered. The RED List page states that inclusion is not a court finding of a violation. The firm's own site says it has ceased all operations due to financial insolvency.

Why is SurgeTrader listed as a sales freeze rather than a closure?

The primary page we hold (Wayback 23 May 2024) says SurgeTrader suspended the sale of new auditions after Match-Trader terminated its platform license. Trade press later quoted a 24 May 2024 firm notice of full closure; that later page is not in our archived 200-status captures, so it is labeled secondary.
