Last updated: 15 October 2026 How much money do US retail forex customers keep with each dealer? We took the “Total Amount of Retail Forex Obligation” column from the CFTC’s financial data for futures commission merchants and retail forex dealers, as of 31 August 2026 (published October 2026), and compared it with August 2025.
Six US firms reported retail forex money owed to customers at the end of August 2026, totalling $470.0M, down 7.2% from $506.6M a year earlier, per the CFTC’s monthly financial data.
GAIN Capital Group held the most, $204.2M, followed by OANDA Corporation at $131.4M. Together they account for 71% of the total.
Four of the six reported less than a year earlier. tastyfx (+13.3%) and Trading.com Markets (+11.5%) were the two that grew.
The US retail forex market is small next to futures. The same file shows about $388 billion of customer assets in futures segregation, more than 800 times the retail forex total.

“Retail forex obligation” is the CFTC’s column for the total amount a firm owes its retail forex customers: their cash plus open profits and losses. FCM is a futures commission merchant; RFED is a retail foreign exchange dealer. Only firms that report a figure above zero are shown.
Why prop traders might care
Many retail traders who start with a prop firm challenge also hold a regular forex account, and in the US only a handful of regulated dealers can offer one. FTMO, one of the largest prop firms, said in December 2025 that it had completed the purchase of OANDA’s parent company. Our Who Owns Your Prop Firm? page quotes OANDA Corporation’s audited statement on that ownership chain and tracks OANDA’s figure since July 2024. Method
We read every row of the August 2025 and August 2026 files and kept firms with a positive retail forex obligation. The same six firms appear in both. Figures are in US dollars as the firms reported them to the CFTC; we did not adjust them.
Shares are each firm’s figure divided by the six-firm total. The futures comparison uses the “Customers’ Assets in Seg” total row of the August 2026 file.
Caveats
The CFTC publishes these figures as the firms report them in their monthly financial filings; we have not audited them. A month-end figure is a snapshot and can swing with markets and customer flows.
A falling figure does not by itself mean a firm is losing customers: it moves with customer profits and losses, deposits and withdrawals. We make no claim about any firm’s financial health.
The list covers only US-registered dealers. Offshore brokers and prop firms that serve US residents are not in this data.
